چکیده

Glottalization of coda /t, p/ is a common process in American English. This study uses acoustic measures to determine when coda glottalization occurs in the conversational speech of the Buckeye Corpus. Vowels preceding coda /t, p/ tokens for 40 speakers were analyzed using H1*–H2*, an acoustic correlate of glottal constriction. Results indicate that coda glottalization is more common before a sonorant, and this effect is still found phrasefinally, even when phrasal creak is taken into account. Nonetheless, the process occurs in other environments. While we conclude that coda glottalization may occur to enhance the voicelessness of coda /t/ before sonorants [20, 28], we argue that this cannot fully explain the phenomenon.

Acoustic Differences Between English /t/ Glottalization and Phrasal Creak

In American English, the presence of creaky voice can derive from distinct linguistic processes, including phrasal creak (prolonged irregular voicing, often at edges of prosodic phrases) and coda /t/ glottalization (when the alveolar closure for syllablefinal /t/ is replaced by or produced simultaneously with glottal constriction). Previous work has shown that listeners can differentiate words ...

Coda /t/ Glottalization in 20 & 50 Year Old American Women

Realization of coda /t/ in American English is sensitive to segmental and prosodic context, as well as speaker age. One 20 year old and three 50 year old American women read an extensive word list designed to pinpoint some effects of context. For the older women, preceding low vowels conditioned more glottalization of /t/, presumably because of the greater effort involved in making an oral clos...

The benefits of vowel laryngealization on the perception of coda stops in English

It has been previously noted that voiceless coda stops in English may undergo optional glottalization, i.e. they are produced with simultaneous glottal closure. The glottal closure usually produces laryngeal coarticulation on the previous vowel in the form of laryngealization (creaky voice). In this paper, the effects of vowel laryngealization on coda stop perception were investigated. Eighteen...

Anticipatory planning of r-insertion in Australian English

In non-rhotic Australian English, glottalization and ‘r’ insertion are strategies used to separate contiguous heterosyllabic vowels (hiatus). This study examined hiatus breaking strategies to determine whether realisation and incidence differed as a function of prosodic context. We were also interested in whether inserted ‘r’ exhibited preplanning. In an elicited production task, 14 nonrhotic A...

Temporal organization of off-glides in American English

This paper tests the hypothesis that offglides /j/ and /w/ are best analyzed as a syllable coda through examining the temporal organization of offglide gestures within a syllable. Kinematic data were collected from four American English speakers using realtime MRI. The gesture timing of offglides was compared in singleton and complex coda contexts to determine whether offglides exhibit local ge...
